Winter road salt can settle on your motorcycle’s wheels, swingarm, engine cases and chain. Leave it there and moisture can help corrosion take hold. A simple routine after salty rides helps you remove the residue and protect the parts exposed to road spray.
1. Rinse off road salt after your ride
You don’t need a full detail every time you ride, but rinse salt from the bike as soon as practical. Focus on the wheels and spokes, swingarm, lower forks, engine cases and other areas hit by road spray.
If grime remains, wash the bike with Muc-Off Motorcycle Cleaner, following the product directions, then rinse thoroughly.
2. Dry the bike
Use a clean microfibre cloth to dry accessible areas, paying attention to exposed metal, fasteners and places where water collects. A clean, dry surface is especially important before applying a longer-lasting protective coating.
3. Choose your winter protection
For protection after washing, Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant disperses remaining moisture and leaves a dry, non-sticky protective film. Mask braking surfaces before application. Shake the can vigorously, apply the protectant, then wipe away excess with a microfibre cloth and leave it to dry.

For a longer-lasting barrier, consider Muc-Off HCB-1. Thoroughly wash and dry the surface first, test a small area for compatibility, and apply it out of direct sunlight to a cool surface. Shake the can, spray a thin, even film and allow it to dry completely. It may need up to 24 hours to cure for the best protection.
Keep HCB-1 off tyre treads and braking surfaces, and cover brakes before spraying. Muc-Off says its barrier remains active for up to 12 months, so it does not need reapplying after every wash.

4. Give the chain its own clean and lube
A chain exposed to salty road spray needs attention too. Rinse the drive chain area, apply Muc-Off Motorcycle Chain Cleaner, agitate grime with a brush or sponge, then rinse the cleaner away. Once the chain is dry, apply a motorcycle chain lube suited to your riding conditions. Muc-Off Motorcycle Wet Weather Chain Lube is designed for harsh, wet rides.
HCB-1 is a corrosion barrier, not a replacement for regular chain lubricant.
How often should you wash road salt off a motorcycle?
Rinse away salt as soon as practical after a ride on treated roads. If the bike is also covered in grime, follow with a proper wash. Check the chain regularly and clean and lubricate it as needed for your motorcycle and riding conditions.
A winter routine can be simple: rinse off the salt, wash when needed, dry the bike, protect exposed surfaces and look after the chain.
