LESS FRICTION, MORE SPEED

The system is 8mm longer than stock Shimano, to provide an optimised chain angle for a more precise shift. Each time the system engages or disengages the pulley wheels, less friction is produced – and less friction means more speed.

Designed alongside Formula One gurus McLaren, Muc-Off has created a new system that is lighter and stiffer than anything available on the market.

Its debut competition outing was on-board Mikel Landa’s Merida Time Warp TT bike, during the infamous stage 20 of the Tour de France, a 36.2KM individual time trial from Lura to La Planche Des Belles Filles.

A FEAT OF ENGINEERING


6.57% STIFFER

L.O.P.S is manufactured from titanium and its ground-breaking design, constructed through additive manufacturing, results in the system being one of the stiffest on the market. Despite being 8mm longer than stock Shimano, it’s over 6.5% stiffer; and compared to CeramicSpeed OSPW System, it’s 2.7% stiffer despite being an impressive 9% lighter, delivering the most precise shift around.

92% LESS FRICTION

The 13-tooth upper pulley wheel and 19-tooth lower are made from aerospace-grade aluminium and use a super-efficient coating to keep friction to an absolute minimum.

The bearings are treated with a special coating which provides us with incredible results. Compared to stock Shimano, the pulley bearing improvement is a massive 92% less friction.

SMOOTHER, MORE PRECISE SHIFTING

The coating has 88% less friction than aluminium alloy, 82% less than hard electroless nickel, 80% less than hard chrome and 71% less than hard anodised. This all gives a smoother, more precise shift.

BORN IN A BARN

Engineering challenges and pro-peloton demands weren’t the only hurdles we had to overcome. The world threw down its own gauntlet in the form of COVID-19. During the UK lockdown, everything required to work on the L.O.P.S system had to be sent to a barn in rural North Dorset.

From here, our head of R&D worked day and night in isolation throughout the pandemic’s early stages, to meet the non-negotiable deadline of the 2020 Tour's pivotal, stage 20 time-trial.

It had to happen, regardless of the cost, time or effort required. The pandemic couldn’t be allowed to destroy over a year's work, L.O.P.S simply had to be on Landa's bike for that all-important stage. And against all odds, we made it.
