You don't need a van full of tools or a full workshop setup to keep your ride alive.
Some of the best tricks come from being stuck mid-ride with a problem and figuring it out on the spot. These are the ones worth knowing - the small, scrappy fixes that keep you moving when things go wrong.
1. The Emergency Tyre Boot That Saves Your Ride
Slash a tyre and you are usually done - unless you improvise.
Use a gel wrapper, energy bar packet, or even a folded bank note inside the tyre, then throw a tube in. It helps stop the tube bulging through the cut and gets you rolling again.
It is not pretty, but it works.
2. Zip Ties = Instant Wheel Truing Stand
If your wheel is wobbling and rubbing your brake, wrap a zip tie around your frame or fork so it just touches the rim.
Spin the wheel and use it as a guide to pull things back into line.
It will not be perfect, but it can be more than enough to get you home.
3. Reset Your Chain Before Heading Home
This is the one most riders ignore.
If your chain is gritty, wet, or making noise at the end of a ride, don't just leave it. A quick clean-down helps stop wear before it starts - hit it with Muc-Off Bio Drivetrain Cleaner to cut through the worst of it in seconds.
Two minutes here can save you a drivetrain later.

4. Carry a Tube - Even If You Run Tubeless
This is the one that catches people out.
Tubeless setups deal with most punctures on their own, but bigger cuts or damage can still stop you in your tracks.
A spare tube turns that into a five-minute fix.
5. Trim Your Zip Ties or Regret It Later
Sounds minor. It is not.
Leave sharp edges on a zip tie and at some point you will catch it with your leg - usually at speed.
Cut them flush. Always.
6. Clean What Matters, Not What Looks Good
If you have only two minutes and your bike is in desperate need of a clean, focus on the drivetrain:
- chain
- cassette
- jockey wheels
That is where performance lives.

7. Keep Something in the Car for the Mess
Wet kit, muddy shoes, filthy gloves - it all has to go somewhere.
Having something ready in the car makes life a lot easier after a grim ride, whether that is a quick temporary fix or something more purpose-built like our Grime Bag.

8. Quiet a Noisy Bike with a Quick Improvised Fix
Mid-ride rattle driving you mad?
Sometimes all it takes is a small bit of padding or repositioning something slightly out of the way. It is not a permanent fix, but it will save your head for the rest of the ride.
Good enough is good enough when you are miles from home.
9. Use a Plug Before You Reach for a Tube
If you are running tubeless and hear that tell-tale hiss, do not rush straight for a tube.
Most punctures will seal quickly, and for anything larger, a plug is the fastest way to get rolling again.
Something like a Muc-Off Puncture Plug Repair Kit is designed exactly for this - lightweight, easy to use, and built for those bigger hits that need a quick fix.

10. The Real Hack: Learn to Improvise
You will not always have the right tool, the right part, or the perfect fix.
But if you have got:
- a bit of creativity
- a few basics in your pack
- and a willingness to bodge something together
You will get home more often than not.
Carry a few basics, learn a few hacks, and you can turn a ride-ending problem into nothing more than a short delay.
