The most important thing when cleaning chrome on a Harley-Davidson® is to reduce the risk of micro-scratching. These extremely fine scratches are usually caused when dust, grit or road dirt becomes trapped beneath a cloth and is dragged across the surface.
A single micro-scratch may be difficult to see, but the damage accumulates with repeated cleaning. Over time, the scratches scatter reflected light and make the chrome appear cloudy, hazy or dull.
To minimise this risk, match the cleaning method to how dirty the motorcycle is. Use a waterless wash only for light, non-gritty dirt and a touchless wash for heavier road grime.
Keep Contact to a Minimum
The safest way to clean Harley-Davidson® chrome is to remove contamination with as little physical contact as possible.
Cleaning Light Dirt
For light dust, fingerprints or minor surface dirt, spray Muc-Off x Harley-Davidson® Waterless Wash onto the chrome and allow it time to lift the contamination.
Wipe gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Turn or refold the cloth regularly so that collected dirt is not repeatedly dragged across the chrome, then use a second clean cloth to buff the surface to a streak-free finish.
Do not use Waterless Wash if the chrome feels gritty or is heavily soiled. Wiping loose particles across the surface—even with a soft cloth—can create micro-scratches. If you are unsure, use the touchless method instead.
Cleaning Heavier Dirt
For heavier dirt, oil or road grime, use a touchless cleaning method. This means using cleaner and controlled water pressure to loosen and rinse away contamination with little or no wiping or scrubbing.
Rinse the chrome first to remove as much loose grit as possible. Apply Bike Wash and allow it time to loosen the remaining dirt, then rinse thoroughly before the cleaner dries.
Removing contamination without physically dragging it across the chrome significantly reduces the risk of micro-scratching. Take care when rinsing around bearings, seals, air intakes and electrical connections.
If dirt remains after rinsing, repeat the cleaning process rather than scrubbing or applying more pressure.
Dry Chrome Without Scratching It
Once the chrome is clean, dry it using a fresh, soft microfibre cloth. Use light pressure and turn the cloth regularly. A separate clean cloth can then be used for final buffing.
Never use a dirty cloth or one that has fallen on the ground. Even tiny particles trapped in its fibres can mark the chrome. Do not leave the motorcycle to air-dry, as this can cause water spots and allow moisture to remain around bolts and joins.
